The mission
Turning off public lights is one component of the international climate change and environmental preservation movement known as Earth Hour. Since its start in 2007 by WWF Australia, it has been held once a year in March ever since. The goal of Earth Hour is to increase people’s awareness about the need to safeguard the environment with the a magnificent motto: “Together for greater protection of the climate.”
The 17th anniversary of the annual Earth hour was on March 23, 2023.
In 2022, natural catastrophes were responsible for the deaths of over 31,000 people all throughout the world, according to statista.
These clusters are primarily the result of climate change caused by humans. Temperatures continue to rise as the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere rises. The higher climate has various effects on individual weather events and can result in extreme weather events, which frequently escalate into catastrophic natural disasters. It is therefore all the more important to raise awareness of Earth Hour and the need for everyone to alter their own behavior.
Participating in Earth Hour is open to anybody who wants to demonstrate leadership in the areas of climate and environmental conservation, like businesses, communities or individuals. Regardless of where in the globe they may be at the time.
Emerald Buddha Temple, Bangkok, Thailand
On this day, the lights of the Sydney Opera House, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Empire State Building were turned off for one hour, along with the lights at hundreds of other famous landmarks across the world.
If every day were Earth Day we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.
Neil deGrasse Tyson, on Earth Day in 2022
Can 60 minutes change the world?
Yes! Even if it is only for an hour, turning off the electricity in 195 different nations across the world has a significant impact on the environment. The Earth Hour is a protest that is both nonviolent and symbolic. The fact that this hour also contributes to the conservation of energy is a beneficial bonus.
The most important thing, however, is that all participants utilize the symbol to turn out the lights in order to make it abundantly apparent that they are demanding a greater commitment from both politicians and industry to the protection of the environment and the climate.
“We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it.”
Barack Obama
Earth Hour is credited with having a good influence on the environment as well as substantial legislative improvements. Organizers of Earth Hour have already been successful in two of their campaigns: one to prohibit the use of plastic bags and packaging in the Galapagos Islands, and the other to secure the first Earth Hour forest in Uganda in an effort to combat deforestation in that country.
There is also Earth Day in addition to Earth Hour, to shield the earth from harmful effects such as pollution and cutting down of trees. Participating in activities such as clearing up rubbish and planting trees helps to make the earth a better and healthier place to live for everyone
Unfortunately, several nations and localities are unwilling to participate in these initiatives. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance that as more nations join, more communities become aware of the initiative and are “forced” to participate by having their lights turned down for the specified period of time.
It is up to you to do a bit, are you willing to?
